Previously, "online focus groups" were really "bulletin boards" where a recruited panel interacts with a moderator using the written word, in a Q&A format, over a few days.    Or, you could get everyone online at the same time, and take them through more of a "discussion," but all dialogue was typed and you couldn't observe the non-verbals, nor could clients react to the discussion in real time, so as to direct the moderator to ask a follow-up question.
